On June 11, the AC Hotel Sant Cugat hosted a new technical conference organized by Barcelona Packaging Hub in collaboration with our technology partner SMC. The event aimed to collectively reflect on the challenges and opportunities of industrial automation in today’s packaging sector.
This event, which brought together engineers, production managers, and innovation experts, was not solely focused on technology or performance. It also created space for critical thinking about the evolution of machines, processes, and production models. With an integrative perspective, the seminar explored how to progress toward a truly efficient, profitable, and reliable industry.
Industry 5.0: technology at the service of people
The keynote speaker, Alberto Morán, an innovation expert, provided a historical perspective on the evolution of industrial automation, with a particular focus on Industry 5.0, a model that places people at the center. It combines advanced technology with sustainability, resilience, and a strong emphasis on customer and talent retention for companies.
The three pillars of smart industrial automation: Productivity, Reliability, and Flexibility
During the session, an in-depth analysis was conducted on three essential concepts that guide the design and efficient operation of industrial machinery: Productivity, Reliability, and Flexibility.
-
Productivity: beyond performance
The need to achieve high production rates without compromising overall system efficiency was emphasized. This involves optimizing not just output volume, but the entire process, investing in technologies that reduce energy consumption, downtime, and waste, thereby maximizing profitability with a sustainable approach.
-
Reliability: uninterrupted continuity
Reliability was highlighted as a critical factor in ensuring long-term machine performance. Strategies for corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance were presented, showing how smart maintenance management can enhance equipment availability, reduce unplanned downtimes, and minimize energy waste.
-
Flexibility: thoughtful adaptability
In a constantly changing environment, the adaptability of production lines is essential. However, the seminar stressed that poorly managed flexibility can lead to operational overload or increased consumption. Therefore, the focus was on designing versatile yet efficient solutions that balance agility with sustainability and durability.

Artificial intelligence as a driver of operational autonomy
One of the most compelling topics was the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in industrial automation. AI is transforming the way machines operate, gradually enabling them to make autonomous decisions based on real-time data analysis. This paves the way for true operational autonomy, where systems can self-adjust and anticipate maintenance needs through predictive techniques.
From Barcelona Packaging Hub, we thank SMC for their collaboration and all the attendees for their active participation in this seminar. We remain committed to driving technological and sustainable innovation in the field of industrial automation.
We look forward to seeing you at our next technical seminar focused on innovation in the packaging sector!
